The 5 most frequently asked questions about automated packaging

Sparck Technologies has been one of the world's first suppliers to build automated packaging machines for custom-sized boxes. These fully automated packing machines can package an order entirely to size within seconds. But what is the ROI of a custom-sized box packaging machine? Are there subsidies for the purchase? And do you need to be a large player to switch to such a packaging system? Right?

The 5 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Automated Packaging

Arnoud Koopmans, International Sales Manager at Sparck Technologies, visits many e-commerce companies and has listed the 5 most frequently asked questions about automated packaging for you.

1. What is the ROI of a packaging machine?

One of the most frequently asked questions about automated packaging and a very understandable one; when will you recoup the investment? On average, the ROI of a CVP Impack or CVP Everest is between 24 and 36 months. However, there are also customers who have recouped the investment within a year. With a custom-sized box, you save an average of 50% on box volume and therefore also on transport movements. A saving that can quickly increase given the current price hikes. There is also a significant reduction in cardboard consumption, which can be around 30% per year. Additionally, an automated packaging line works up to 20 times faster than manual packaging stations.

2. From how many packages can I switch to automated packaging?

It is often thought that you need to send thousands of packages a day for an interesting ROI. That turns out not to be the case. From about 800 packages a day, there is already an interesting business case.

Besides the number of packages sent per day, there are more motivations to invest in an automated packaging line. Being ready for future growth, the tight labor market, rising transport costs, or the obligation to package sustainably are frequently heard reasons to invest in an automated packaging machine for custom-sized boxes.

3. Are there subsidies for the purchase?

Some countries do. The Dutch government promotes sustainable economic growth and wants to encourage the use of environmentally friendly equipment. The CVPs from Sparck Technologies are listed on the Environmental List. Therefore, the Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA) and the Arbitrary Depreciation of Environmental Investments (Vamil) apply to the purchase of the machine. The tax advantage can therefore amount to over 11% net.

4. Can multiple orders be packaged simultaneously?

Yes, they can. It does not matter how many orders go into the box or if the shape of the order is round, square, or hexagonal. From eight shoeboxes to one headphone, it can all be packed in one box. Once the order has passed through the 3D scanner, the machine knows which size box needs to be cut from the strip of endless cardboard. In practice, both CVPs can package about 85% to 90% of the average stock of a warehouse.

5. Why package in cardboard? Plastic is cheaper.

That our machines package in cardboard is a conscious choice. Cardboard is 100% recyclable and therefore more environmentally friendly. And while steps are indeed being taken in the field of recycled plastic, it is estimated that more than 8 million tons still end up in the ocean annually. Additionally, cardboard as a packaging material offers better protection during transport, is easier to stack, and makes returns for the end customer much simpler.
